NQZ: A year of flying under a new code

Exactly one year ago, on June 8, Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport acquired a new International Air Transport Association (IATA) code NQZ. Since then, all airline ticket booking systems use the new airport code NQZ, and departing from other airports passengers can see it on tickets, boarding passes and luggage tags.

n honor of this significant date in connection with the anniversary of the renaming of the code, as well as the 90th anniversary of the airport was the opening of the “Alley of aviators”. The event was attended by aviation veterans, representatives of airlines, customs, border guards, trade union and the media. It is planned to lay down a good tradition on this day to annually plant trees on this alley.

It should be noted that the past year was a year of great trials for the airport. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the catastrophic decline in international passenger traffic we refocused on cargo and transit flights, managed to avoid layoffs and retained all operational staff. A new production team with extensive experience in the aviation industry was formed.

A lot of work was done to ensure quarantine measures and to protect passengers and staff from coronavirus infection. The following was installed: automatic system of thermal imaging control, markings for compliance with the social distance, mask mode was introduced, separation barriers for incoming and outgoing groups of passengers were put up, questionnaires for passengers of international flights were conducted, PCR test is required for guests arriving from abroad in the capital, the access to the airport building is made through Ashyq application. For the convenience of passengers and guests of the capital the service of testing for coronavirus infection COVID-19 by PCR and ELISA methods is available at the GrinLab Testing Center.

The capital’s airport was one of the first in Kazakhstan to successfully test and implement the transmission of online information in a global format about the condition of the runway surface. This is required to comply with ICAO methodology. Operational data from the apron have a direct connection through tablets with the database of the Civil Aviation Committee.

As part of the investment program it is expected to update the special equipment for flight safety in the amount of 29 units. This renewal is required to replace obsolete equipment and update the airport’s technical facilities fleet.
